For years the only highly effective organic
weapon in the war against weeds was the
infamous dandelion digger. Considering that
the topsoil in a typical 5,000 square foot
residential lawn is home to more than 25
million weed seeds just waiting to germinate,
seasonal battles against these unwanted
plants would continue, but the war could
never really be won. All of this is now
changing.
Over a decade ago, a research project at
Iowa State University led to the discovery
of a natural pre-emergent weed control technology
that has only recently become available
to consumers.
Dr. Nick Christians of the Iowa State Research
Foundation found that corn gluten, which
is a byproduct of the corn milling process,
not only provides an excellent natural source
of nitrogen for your lawn, but also inhibits
the germination of weeds. Most turf weeds
are annuals or short-lived perennials, which
germinate every spring, set seed during
the growing season, and then die back in
late fall. When corn gluten is applied at
the right time and in the right proportions,
up to 90% of the weeds in your lawn can
be controlled within a couple of seasons.
Corn gluten has been used for many years
as feed for livestock and as a protein source
in pet food. It is harmless to mature plants,
people and pets, and it will not harm beneficial
insects or soil organisms. A patent was
issued in 1991.
