the culmination of years of intense breeding

Strong Creeping Red Fescue
BREEDING
The program leading to SR 5200E began in the
early 1980s. Germplasm was collected and screened
at the USDA research facility at Beltsville,
Md., for higher turf quality under stress
conditions, fine leaf texture and leafspot
resistance. New material was added to that
breeding process in 1991, from the University
of Rhode Island, that had very high endophyte
levels. This new germplasm source compared
favorably to the USDA material in texture,
color and growth habit. The final breeding
work was conducted at SRO's research facility
in Corvallis, Ore. Both programs emphasized
using germplasm collected from low maintenance
sites for long-term survival.
SUPERIOR
TURF PERFORMANCE
SR 5200E has an improved, dark green color
and moderately fine leaf texture that compliments
many of today's elite Kentucky bluegrasses
and perennial ryegrasses. This endophyte-enhanced
strong creeping red fescue has exceptional
resistance to leafspot and powdery mildew.
In addition to being an excellent seed producer,
SR 5200E has an aggressive, dense growth habit
without being overly thatchy.
ADAPTATION
AND USE
SR 5200E is perfectly adapted for home lawns,
commercial turf and golf course use whether
alone or in blends and mixtures. It performs
well in shade or sun, and will tolerate a
wide range of soil textures and conditions.
It adds early spring green-up and winter color
to many blends.
